Cours de Mme Bory :
Georgian England
Cours de Monsieur Delogu :
US History and Culture: Transcendentalism
This course will examine the origins, development, impact, and legacy of the spiritual and literary movement in America known as Transcendentalism. This movement has its origins in Concord, Massachusetts in the 1830s and 40s where a circle of friends and neighbors, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry D. Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller, shared their thoughts and feelings, orally and in writing (lectures, sermons, poems, essays, letters), on man's (and woman's) spiritual and moral development in a rapidly changing new modern world. This course will examine the themes that most interested these "transcendentalists" and discuss the impact that their ideas and writings have had on subsequent generations over the following 200 years.
