How can a logo convey a sense of tradition or of modernity? How can administrations convey trustworthiness through visual identity? How can an infographic or a PSA make important information legible to a specific target audience? How can a marketing campaign capture our attention and persuade us to buy a product? In short, what do images communicate and how do they do this?
This course offers an introduction to visual rhetoric and image analysis in English. Using real-world examples, we will study the tools, vocabulary, and strategies of visual communication to analyze what types of images there are, how they function, and how we can use them to communicate our own explicit and implicit messages.
